An autoresponder sends an automatic reply after someone submits your form. Google Forms has a basic built-in receipt; here is when it is enough and how to send a custom one.
Google Forms can email respondents a copy of their answers if you enable "Collect email addresses" and set response receipts to "If respondent requests it" or "Always". That is a true autoresponder, but the message is fixed: it is a plain copy of the form answers with no custom subject, no branding, and no next-step instructions. If respondents should receive a tailored confirmation, use an add-on like FormNotifier to send a custom autoresponder template with merge fields.
| Native response receipt | FormNotifier autoresponder | |
|---|---|---|
| Message body | Fixed copy of all answers | Custom subject and body with merge fields |
| Who receives it | Respondent only | Respondent, owner, or any additional recipients |
| Tone and branding | Generic Google format | Write it to match your event, class, or support workflow |
| Next-step instructions | Not possible | Add payment links, schedules, or contact details |
| Test before launch | Submit and check manually | Send a test email and check the recent send report |
| Setup effort | One toggle in form settings | Five-minute sidebar setup, once per form |
Limitations to accept: the email content cannot be edited, it only goes to the respondent, and it contains every answer including ones you may not want echoed back.
Set a custom subject line and body, and insert form answers with merge fields so each respondent gets a relevant reply.
Send the autoresponder to the respondent and a different alert to your team from the same submission.
Run Preflight and send a test email before sharing the form, so a broken template never reaches real respondents.
Check whether autoresponder emails actually went out instead of guessing from silence.
FormNotifier adds respondent confirmations, owner alerts, multiple recipients, custom templates, test sends, and recent send results to Google Forms.
Install FormNotifier from MarketplaceIf the form does not collect emails and has no required email question, the autoresponder has nowhere to go.
A template that looks fine can break when an answer is empty. Always test with a realistic submission.
Long receipts get ignored. Echo only the details the respondent needs to act on.
Check the recent send report after launch so failed deliveries surface the same day.
